It was the conversation in the church kitchen about a certain political leader and the parishioners “sinful” feelings about that leader. This is what got me thinking about how Christian Leaders have an important voice in the church community about how to process the massive amount of information that is being shared primarily through news sources, but also by commentators and friends and family.
In the midst of the overwhelm, I think it is helpful to teach the spiritual disciplines in new ways. And so I started a weekly blog post for my parish which is entitled “How to Watch the News….and other coping strategies”. It is isn’t earth shatteringly novel or exciting, just normal, run of the mill ideas that help those in my parish and myself (because I don’t share what I don’t practice) navigate the maelstrom of what is unfolding in our world. I’ve invited my parishioners to share what is helping them as well. It has started some interesting and encouraging conversations.

The Epistles are a rich resource for how to discern information, what to do in the face of false teachings and what are the values we are to hold onto as we navigate challenging times. Let us help the people in our churches work towards the renewing of their minds.
